We are Local Change Agents

Tomasz Ordza
On Thursday, February 13th, we were at the Faculty of Biology of UAM in Poznań. At the beginning we had a lecture "Mushrooms - an ambulance for man, plants and the environment with Professor Lembicz, where we learned about the role of mushrooms in our environment and how they help it. After the lecture we observed water samples through microscopes and searched for organisms found in it. Then we found out how "in vitro" can help to save soon to be extinct species of plants and how they can multiply. We had the opportunity to do it ourselves and take it home with us. Finally, we had a very interesting lecture on genetics. We did a test to see how different we are from each other. We also learned about genetic diseases and how they are passed on. Finally, our trip came to an end and we all came back home with new and certainly useful knowledge.

The students reflected about clean water for everyone. Nowadays the lack of water in the world becomes a global problem. The students read the European Water Letter. Students became more aware of taking steps in their daily lives to save water and not pollute. They saw a movie and had a debate. Then, they wrote a letter together.

We went to try to understand how they treat olive trees and vineyards in a rural area in Borba, Alentejo. We conducted interviews with those responsible to find out if they use any compounds that cause pollution.
